Israelis, Terrorists Battle Near Nablus

Transcribed from the clipping
TEL AVIV (AP) — Israeli troops, aided by helicopters, fought a running gun battle with suspected El Fatah terrorists in the mountains near the troubled west bank town of Nablus Sunday, the army here said. Thirteen Arab terrorists were captured, 11 of them wounded, an army spokesman said.
A small arsenal of weapons, including Soviet automatic arms, Czech mines and Syrian hand grenades were seized, he added. It was the second gunfight around Nablus, suspected of being the El Fatah base in the Israeli-occupied west bank, in two days. Saturday night, border police killed one of a gang of terrorists which ambushed them. Another was captured.
There were no Israeli casualties in Sunday’s fight. Scores of terrorists and saboteurs have been rounded up in the occupied west bank in the last two weeks, during which Arab terrorism has been intensified.
Military authorities clamped down Friday on Nablus, where merchants are suspected of financing and supplying El Fatah squads known to be hiding in the hills around the town.
How this transcription was made
Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. PUBLICATION NAME CORRECTED FROM THE PAGE: the slide label reads 'San Antonio Express News', but the folio printed across the top of this page reads 'Page 4-A ★ SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS', read at fourteen times page scale, with a dash following where the date line is trimmed off. The archive already holds both names as separate papers - 'San Antonio Express' and 'San Antonio Express News' - and the page itself says Express, so that is what has been used. The page number is taken from the same folio and recorded as printed, '4-A'. The date is NOT on the scan; it rests on the slide label, corroborated by the story's reference to a gun battle 'Sunday' and the Israeli foreign minister having arrived in New York 'last Monday' for the UN General Assembly. 24 September 1967 was a Sunday. The story is Associated Press copy, marked '(AP)' in the dateline rather than carrying a byline. Read from crops magnified to between twelve and fourteen times page scale.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
