Palestine Refugee Problem Grows Harder After War

Transcribed from the clipping
BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) — A problem of humanity that has gone on nearly 20 years—what to do about the Palestine refugee—is growing in the wake of the Middle East war. It started when the old British-mandated territory of Palestine was partitioned to form a Jewish homeland, now Israel.
It reached a climax in the Arab-Israeli war of 1948, when many Arabs were uprooted from their homes.
… Michelmore’s report to the General Assembly in 1966 had a prophetic paragraph: “As year succeeds year, there is no sign that the refugees are becoming any less embittered by their conviction that a grave injustice has been done to them through the loss of their homes and country and the continued deprivation of any benefit from the property they left behind.
The implications for peace and stability in the Middle East of the continued existence of the Palestine refugee problem thus remain as grave as ever.”
How this transcription was made
Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. The date is fixed from the page itself: the folio line reads 'NYACK, N.Y., WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1967', and 20 September 1967 was a Wednesday. The publication was filed as The Journal News on ingest and corrected on 25 October 2026. The masthead at the right of that same folio line begins 'THE ROCKLA...' and is cut off by the edge of the scan, and a house advertisement lower on the page reads 'ROCKLAND COUNTY JOURNAL-NEWS REGIONAL OFFICES' with addresses in New City, North Rockland, Pearl River and Ramapo. This is the Rockland County paper published at Nyack, New York, whereas all nine of the archive's existing 'The Journal News' records carry the city White Plains, in Westchester. See the queries. THE EXCERPT CONTAINS ONE ELISION, marked with an ellipsis, so that the quoted UNRWA passage sits inside the record's press text. The story is Associated Press copy, marked '(AP)' in the dateline rather than carrying a byline. Read from crops magnified to between thirteen and twenty-four times page scale. The paper is filed under the name its own page prints: the house advertisement reads “ROCKLAND COUNTY JOURNAL-NEWS REGIONAL OFFICES”, and the cut masthead beginning “THE ROCKLA…” is consistent with it. It is a different paper from the archive’s nine The Journal News records, which are the White Plains paper in Westchester; this one is published at Nyack, in Rockland County. The two are not merged.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
