Transcribed from the clipping

NABLUS, Jordan, Sept. 19—The merchants of this west-bank city staged a general strike today to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly of the United Nations. A leaflet calling the strike mentioned the opening of the session and urged the Arab residents to demonstrate their opposition to the Israeli annexation of East Jerusalem and occupation of the west bank.

The strike was called for the entire west bank and Jerusalem, but it was fully effective only in Nablus, traditionally a center of Arab nationalism. All the stores here except cafes and groceries remained shuttered. The Israeli military police arrested 10 persons.

How this transcription was made

Read from the scan at 4x by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by OCR and not by a person. No masthead or folio; the date follows the dateline 'NABLUS, Jordan, Sept. 19' plus one day, and the paper is named by the credit line 'Special to The New York Times'. The year is not printed anywhere on the clipping and rests on the slide label plus the content. The whole item is transcribed.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
