Not All Arabs Hate the Jews
By Leo Heiman, Newsday Special Correspondent

Transcribed from the clipping
Bethlehem—Not all Arabs living and working in the areas newly occupied by Israel feel the same degree of resentment toward their conquerors. Take Victor Jarjoura, an Arab who lives in Bethlehem. Jarjoura is a Christian and a manufacturer of religious objects.
Asked how painful the occupation boot of the Israelis is to him, he smiled and said, “In my case, it’s not boot, not even a shoe, but a soft slipper.”
How this transcription was made
Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. The newspaper IS fixed from the page: the byline reads 'By Leo Heiman / Newsday Special Correspondent' and the photograph is credited 'Newsday Photo by Dick Kraus', both read at magnification. The spelling matches the archive's existing 'Newsday' exactly. NO DATE IS PRINTED ANYWHERE ON THIS CUT - no masthead, running head or folio - so the date rests on the slide label, corroborated only by the content, which describes the occupation as recent ('the areas newly occupied by Israel') and cites a census of westward flight then under way. The excerpt is short because it stops at the end of the first quoted passage; the article continues at length and is legible, so it can be extended. The paragraph following the excerpt sets the subject's surname differently from the two instances above it, apparently through broken type; I have transcribed only the two clear instances. Read from crops magnified to between fifteen and eighteen times page scale.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1967-064.
