“His has been an insistent voice proclaiming Israel’s right to Judea and Samaria—the ‘West Bank’ seized by Jordan in 1948… Israel must express its claims to legitimacy in the West’s shared vocabulary of liberal democratic politics. Its aspirations must be intelligible to the secular people who could not care less what God promised Abraham.”
