Ralph de Toledano, syndicated: “Menachem Begin, whose Likud Party won the recent Israeli elections, was speaking fact when he stated that the West Bank of the Jordan River was ‘liberated’ territory and ‘our land.’ By any reasonable reading of history, the West Bank does belong to the Jews, however convenient pundits and State Department types may find it to ignore the facts.” He then numbers the argument, from the Balfour Declaration through partition: “The Jews sadly accepted the partition, but the Arabs turned it down.” And: “the ‘legitimate aspirations’ of the Palestinians were satisfied when the British gave them two-thirds of Palestine. If King Hussein has made them second-class citizens in Jordan, the Palestinian quarrel is with him, not with Israel.”
