United Nations, N. Y., March 23 (AP)—The United Nations announced plans today to resettle 50,000 Palestine refugees in the Sinai Desert of Egypt. The project will be carried out with full cooperation of the Egyptian government which first suggested the scheme.

The United Nations relief and works agency for Palestine refugees in the Near East hopes to make the desert bloom as it did in biblical times. The first step will be a survey of the area by a team of experts including a soil chemist and agricultural specialists. The full cost of the project has not yet been figured.

Money for it will be transferred from the agency’s direct relief funds, most of which were contributed by the United States.

How this transcription was made

Read from the scan at 2.5x; the excerpt is the entire article, which ends on a complete sentence with a rule below it. The clipping carries no masthead, no folio and no page number, so the newspaper rests on the hand-typed slide label alone. The day is supported by the page without being printed on it: the story is datelined “United Nations, N. Y., March 23 (AP)” and says the plans were announced “today”, which a 24 March paper carries in the ordinary way. THE YEAR IS NOWHERE ON THE CLIPPING and 1951 is the label’s. The agency is given in lower case as “The United Nations relief and works agency for Palestine refugees in the Near East”, where the sibling clipping on the same slide capitalises it; both are as printed.
