Within its boundaries live 33,000 persons in a bleak, day-to-day existence aggravated by the tension and hostility of the country they now call home. UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYES of an Israeli soldier, Arab women hurry by with bags of cotton on their heads. CHILDREN PLAY in the shadow of a demolished Gaza Strip building. Schools were reopened recently after being shut down for two months following anti-Israeli demonstrations. YOUNGSTER licks the spoon while eating his daily ration of beans and peas. HAPPY DAY arrives when Jabalia refugees collect monthly supplies from the United Nations distribution center.
