“‘Let us agree,’ he said seriously, ‘that the refugees constitute a terrible human problem… Israel is not going to solve the problem because of its moral implications…’ Since the one chance to disagree had been forthwith subtracted from the dialogue, I listened… The Arab refugees are now into their third generation. No one has come up with an alternative.”

The shorter printing, and it ends on a sentence that opens a paragraph in the longer one. Four paragraphs are missing from the bottom: the one naming Israeli intransigence, the one describing returning refugees as “300,000 potential enemies” whose homes had been razed for highways and kibbutzim, and the two closing paragraphs in which Golden says twenty years of visiting newsmen had produced nothing. The paper cut from the bottom, which is how columns are cut. The paragraphs nearest the bottom were the ones assigning responsibility.
