Refugees Pin All Hopes on Nasser
Jericho Palestinian Group
Henry N. Taylor, Scripps-Howard Staff Writer, Jericho, Jordan

Transcribed from the clipping
“JERICHO, Jordan, Aug. 5—Here 1200 sweltering feet below sea level, where the River Jordan stagnates into the Dead Sea, sit 90,000 of the world’s angriest and—right now—most frightened people. They are Palestinian refugees who used to live in what 10 years ago became Israel. They still want to go home…
SECRETS. ‘I will show you two secrets,’ said a man with flashing black eyes outside a refugee hut near the walls of ancient Jericho. Inside the mud brick hut he untangled a muddle of old clothes and shook two objects out on the matted floor. One was a key to his abandoned house in Jaffa, Israel. The other was a photo of Abdel Nasser…
CAME IN ’48. Most came here to Jericho in the winter of 1948 after midnight departures with little more possessions than the family and maybe a mule could carry. The refugees claim they were driven out at Israeli bayonet point.
The Israelis say they fled with no urging… along the rows of possessionless huts in a camp which houses 27,000 with only eight known beds—you hear one clear word out of every mumble of Arabic. The word is ‘Nasser.’”
Context added by this archive
The key is kept in a bundle of old clothes, and the two explanations of 1948 are printed four paragraphs apart in the same column.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
