Italian Police Link Bombing, Slain Arab

Transcribed from the clipping
ROME (AP) — Police investigating the mystery killing of the Palestine Al Fatah propaganda chief in Italy said Tuesday he had been questioned about the bombing of an Israeli jetliner two months ago.
A full day of investigation gave police no clues about the identities of the two gunmen who riddled Abdel Wael Zuaiter, 38, with 12 shots in the courtyard of his apartment building Monday night. Spokesmen for Israeli extremist groups that swore revenge for Palestine guerrilla violence abroad said in Jerusalem they had nothing to do with the Rome slaying.
Al Fatah, largest of the Palestine guerrilla organizations, said it was the work of Israeli agents. Zuaiter, whose father was a cousin of the Al Fatah leader Yasir Arafat, worked at the Libyan embassy here as a translator. He had been questioned by police after a booby-trapped record player exploded aboard an El Al plane with 149 persons aboard on Aug. 17.
Only two passengers were injured and the jet landed safely.
How this transcription was made
Masthead not readable on the scan. The label on the slide read: UNCONFIRMED — Maria's label says Portland Press Herald; no masthead or folio appears on this scan — PARTIALLY OBSCURED, reading given with a stated basis. A handwritten ink figure — a numeral 4, almost certainly a slide or folder mark, not part of the page — is drawn across the last two words. At 12x and at a 14x tight crop I can see clearly: “Italian Police Link Bombing, Sl_i_ Ara_”. The S, l and the dotted i of the fifth word are legible under and beside the ink; the a and n are partly covered. “Ara” is fully legible; the final character sits entirely inside the solid ink blob and I cannot see it at all. Letter count and position are consistent with Slain Arab and with nothing else I can construct, and Maria's note gives the same reading, but the final b is NOT visually confirmed and I will not claim it is.
