ROME (AP) — A relative of Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat was assassinated in Rome Monday night. He was employed at the Libyan Embassy and was active in propagandizing the cause of the Palestinian Arabs. Police said the man was Abdel Wael Zuaiter, 38, whose father was a cousin of Arafat. Zuaiter was felled by eight pistol shots in the courtyard of the building where he lived.

Witnesses said they saw two men run to a waiting car after the shooting. Two of Zuaiter’s brothers were killed in an Israeli raid on guerrilla camps in Lebanon four years ago.

How this transcription was made

The paper is taken from Maria's slide label, not from a masthead: no masthead or folio appears on the clipping. It is the only clipping on that slide and the only label, so the mapping is unambiguous. Masthead not readable on the scan. The label on the slide read: [no masthead on clipping] — Single scan, one clipping; body read at 3.5x magnification. — No masthead, running head or printed date on the cut. The story says the killing happened “Monday night”; Wael Zuaiter was shot in Rome on Monday 16 October 1972, which gives a Tuesday 17 October paper. Consistent with Maria’s label but inferred, not read.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
