ROME (AP) — A relative of Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat was assassinated in Rome Monday night. He was employed at the Libyan Embassy and was active in propagandizing the cause of the Palestinian Arabs. Police said the man was Abdel Wael Zuaiter, 38, whose father was a cousin of Arafat. Zuaiter was felled by eight pistol shots in the courtyard of the building where he lived.

Witnesses said they saw two men run to a waiting car after the shooting. Two of Zuaiter's brothers were killed in an Israeli raid on guerrilla camps in Lebanon four years ago.

How this transcription was made

No masthead on the cut. 'The Bee' rests on Maria's label alone, and it is an ambiguous name — the Sacramento, Modesto and Fresno Bees all carried AP copy in 1972. Worth resolving before ingest so the archive does not acquire a paper that is really three. — No printed date. The story says the killing happened 'Monday night'; Oct. 16 1972 was a Monday, so a Tuesday Oct. 17 paper fits Maria's label. The year is not printed on the cut. — This is the whole of the article — three paragraphs. The clipping also carries the tail of an unrelated story above ('the motion.') and the top of another headline below, both left out. A narrow strip of a neighbouring column runs down the right edge and is not part of this story.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
