Relative of Arab guerrilla leader killed

Transcribed from the clipping
ROME, Italy (AP) — A relative of Palestinian guerrilla leader Yasir Arafat was assassinated here last night. He was employed at the Libyan Embassy and was active in propagandizing the cause of the Palestinian Arabs. Police said the man was Abdel Wael Zuaiter, 38, whose father was a cousin of Arafat.
Zuaiter was felled by eight pistol shots in the courtyard of the building where he lived. Witnesses said they saw two men run to a waiting car after the shooting. Two of Zuaiter's brothers were killed in an Israeli raid on guerrilla camps in Lebanon four years ago.
How this transcription was made
Single scan, one cut column. Transcribed from a 4x crop; the type is large and clean. — No masthead, no date line, no page folio on this clipping — it is a cut single column with only a rule above the headline and the start of an unrelated item (“DONNELLY DIES”) below. Internal evidence: “assassinated here last night,” and the killing of Wael Zuaiter in Rome was the night of Oct. 16, 1972, which makes an Oct. 17 paper correct. Paper taken on Maria's label alone.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
