ROME (AP) — A relative of Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat was assassinated in Rome Monday night. He was employed at the Liyan Embassy and was active in propagandizing the cause of the Palestinian Arabs. Police said the man was Abdel Wael Zuaiter, 38, whose father was a cousin of Arafat. Zuaiter was felled by eight pistol shots in the courtyard of the building where he lived.

Witnesses said they saw two men run to a waiting car after the shooting. Two of Zuaiter's brothers were killed in an Israeli raid on guerrilla camps in Lebanon four years ago.

How this transcription was made

Single scan, two cut columns, of which only the left column and the top of the right belong to this story. Transcribed from 5–7x crops. — No masthead, no date line, no folio on the clipping — two cut columns only. Internal evidence: “assassinated in Rome Monday night” (Oct. 16, 1972 was a Monday), and the adjoining item says Gen. Federici “died in a Rome hospital Sunday night,” so this is a Tuesday paper. Oct. 17, 1972 was a Tuesday. Consistent with Maria's label but not confirmed from the page. — “the Liyan Embassy” — a printed error for “Libyan Embassy.” Verified at 5x; the word is set LIYAN. Kept as set.
