Israeli Arabs and Jews unite for right of villagers to return

“TEL AVIV, (By mail) — The government, alarmed by the tide of public opinion in favor of the right of the former inhabitants of Biram and Iqrit to return to their villages, has declared that region to be a ‘closed area.’ This means that no one will be allowed to enter this area without permission from the military authorities.
In using these strongarm tactics, the government is trying to isolate the struggle.
On the 24th anniversary of the eviction of the inhabitants of Biram and Iqrit and on the 21st anniversary of the demolition of the villages in contradiction to the orders of the court, large meetings were held, on the initiative of the national council for solidarity with the villagers of Biram and Iqrit, in which over 1,000 people participated including Jewish and Arab citizens from all over the country.
Among the public figures who participated was the writer Mordechai Avi-Shaul, who brought a letter of solidarity with the villagers from the ‘Israeli League for Human Rights,’ Knesset member A.
Levenbraun; members of the political bureau of the Communist Party of Israel, Emil Habibi and David (Uzi) Bornshtein; Alkas Masis, from ‘Ha Olam Ha Zey,’ and members of Matzpen and Siah. Archbishop Joseph Ria, leader of the solidarity committee, briefly surveyed the history of the eviction from Biram and Iqrit on Dec. 23, 1948, and the struggle to return.”

Biram is Kafr Bir’im. The archive now holds this village three times, across forty-nine years: evicted here in 1973 on the twenty-fourth anniversary, told at length by the Associated Press in 1972, and photographed in ruins beside a Palestinian American’s column in the Courier-Journal in 2021.
Jewish and Arab citizens are in the same meeting, and the paper names them.
