PEKING — Vice Chairman Deng Xiaoping told PLO leader Yasser Arafat on Friday that Chinese aid to the Palestinian cause will be limited, the official Xinhua news agency reported. “You have to rely mainly on your own efforts and on the unity of the Arab countries and peoples,” Deng told the Palestine Liberation Organization leader.

But Arafat denied he had been rebuffed in his bid for greater Chinese assistance. He declined to spell out the results of his talks but said he obtained “very concrete” commitments from the Chinese leadership.

Arafat also told reporters that the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat proved there will be no Middle East peace until the Palestinians get their own homeland. Asked whether Sadat's death would force a change in U.S. policy in the Middle East, Arafat said, “Be sure that what happened in the area in the last 72 hours is the answer to your question.

“(There will be) no peace, no settlements, no solutions, no stability by overjumping the Palestinian rights, including our right to return to our homeland, our right for self-determination, our right for our own independent state.”

Arafat, a critic of Sadat for signing the Camp David accords with Israel and the United States, said the Egyptian army and people could never forgive “a man who capitulates and gives up the rights of the Palestinian cause, the Palestinian people and Jerusalem.” Arafat also met with Chairman Hu Yaobang during his final day in China.

How this transcription was made

No masthead on the cut; attribution rests on Maria's label. Same paper and same day as the other clipping on this slide, by her labelling. — No printed date. Deng met Arafat 'on Friday' and Arafat refers to 'the last 72 hours' after Sadat's assassination (Oct. 6 1981), which puts the meeting on Friday Oct. 9 and the paper on Oct. 10. The year is not printed. — This is the whole of the article. The bracketed '(There will be)' is the paper's own interpolation inside Arafat's quote, printed exactly so.
