Palestinian doctor sentenced as Soviet spy TEL AVIV, Israel - A Palestinian doctor was senteneed to 10 years in prison for acting as a Soviet spy un Israel and the Israeli-occupied West Bank of the Jordan River, Israel Radio said Saturday. Dr.
Johar Sayigh, 35, a Palestinian Arab from the West Bank town of Bir Zeit, was recruited by the So- viets while studying medicine in Moscow, the radio said. It said he returned to the West Bank with or- ders to spy for the KGB, the Soviet secret police and intelligence agency. Sayigh was aceused of spying both in the West Bank and in Israel itself.
At the time of his arrest in Oçtober, the Military Command said Sayigh had been instructed to transmit his information through KGB channels at the Soviet Embassy in Amman, Jordan. It was the first time in memory that Israel has ever claimed to have found a Soviet spy among the Palestinians.
