Israel seizes land to add to settlement

Transcribed from the clipping
Israel seizes land to add to settlement Tel Aviv (Reuter) - Israeli military au- thorities said yesterday they had seized about 2,500 acres of land near Nablus in the occupied West Bank of the Jordan to add to the Jewish settlement of Ariel. An Israeli spokesman said the area was earmarked for use as an industrial zone.
Village headmen in the area at Salfit, west of Nablus, met yesterday to discuss their response and a lawyer, Felicia Lang- er, said later she had been asked to take steps to oppose the seizure in the Israeli Supreme Court.
The headmen said the land was owned by villagers and used to grow olives, but the Israeli spokesman maintained it was state-owned and could not be cultivated. Ariel is one of the largest West Bank Jewish settlements with a population of about 2,000. The Israelis say factories will be built there to provide jobs.
