The scan is the banner headline; there is no body text on it to transcribe. The page was confirmed against the paper’s own front page. The identical banner ran that Sunday morning in at least five American papers — Baltimore, Sioux City, Mansfield, Asheville and Tucson — all on page one.

The vote itself, across the top of a Baltimore front page: 33 to 13. Thirty-three states voted to divide a country whose majority population was not among them. This archive holds the two days after it as well — the Princeton Daily Clarion’s banner on 2 December (CP-1947-029) is what the next stage looked like in an Indiana daily.
