“If the Jewish National Home is ever permanently established with the consent and cooperation of the indigenous Arab population, and under the equal protection of Great Britain, it probably will be the first time in history that such a thing has happened… The establishment of a national home for the American Indian in, let us say, New England would be sure to raise psychological and social problems transcending the actual necessities of the case… the Arabs have enjoyed possession in Palestine since the seventh century.”

The paper that wrote indigenous also wrote primitives, forty lines apart, in one column — and conceded Arab possession since the seventh century in the same breath. Both belong on the record if either does. Recognition was compatible with contempt, and that is how the record reads. The editorial also reaches for American settler colonialism as its own explanatory frame, unprompted, in 1930.
