JERUSALEM, May 4 — An 18-year-old Palestinian student was shot dead today and another teen-ager was wounded as Israeli troops clashed with demonstrators in the occupied Gaza Strip.

An army spokesman said the incident occurred after an army patrol passing Al Awda girls’ school in Khan Yunis spotted 10 masked men in the schoolyard pressing students to go into the street and demonstrate. The patrol entered the schoolyard, the spokesman said, arrested two of the men and ordered the students to disperse.

The students poured into the street and began throwing stones, cinder blocks, chairs and tables at the four soldiers, according to the army’s account. Shots were fired into the air, then into the crowd. Two students were hit, one 18 and one 16. The 18-year-old, identified by Palestinian sources as Ihsan Abu Daraz, was hit in the chest, the army spokesman said.

Palestinians said the bullet entered her back. Her death brought to 14 the number of Arabs killed by Israeli gunfire since severe demonstrations erupted in the occupied territories in mid-March. Palestinian journalists who interviewed demonstrators said the army’s contention that 10 masked men were inciting protests was not true.

There were no masked men, the Palestinians said.

How this transcription was made

Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. The page carries no masthead or folio, but the date is corroborated twice from the page itself: the dateline reads 'JERUSALEM, May 4', and the Tiffany advertisement on the same page is headed 'MOTHER'S DAY IS MAY 9', American Mother's Day having fallen on 9 May in 1982. The newspaper is identified from the printed credit line 'Special to The New York Times'. Readers should note what the article does and does not say: the dead 18-year-old is named and aged in the fourth paragraph, where two pronouns disclose that she was a girl; neither the headline nor the lede says so, although the second paragraph places the shooting at a girls' school. The page prints the army's account that she was 'hit in the chest' alongside the Palestinians' account that 'the bullet entered her back', and does not adjudicate between them. Read from crops magnified to ten times page scale.
