Israelis Are Censoring Accounts of Invasion

Transcribed from the clipping
All dispatches filed by correspondents from Israel on the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon are subject to censorship by the military authorities. Last Sunday, the Israelis extended military censorship to accounts issued by the United Nations on the fighting.
Foreign reporters were barred from transmitting parts of statements issued by Timur Goksel, the spokesman of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Naqura, Lebanon. Israeli military censors have also reviewed photographs filed from the the invasion zone.
On Sunday, several photographers were detained by military authorities while they were taking pictures of Israeli troops crossing the border into Lebanon. One picture filed by United Press International depicting a file of tanks crossing a bridge was retouched by military censors before it was filed.
How this transcription was made
Masthead not readable on the scan. The label on the slide read: [masthead not on clipping] — No masthead, folio, date, dateline or byline anywhere on this cut; it is a short standing box or editors’ note set in italic display type with no credit of any kind. The only internal dating is “Last Sunday” and “On Sunday,” and the subject is the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon, which began 6 June 1982. Nothing on the page narrows it further. Maria’s fourth label for the slide, 25 June 1982, is the only label left after the other three images are matched to the labels their own text supports, and the subject fits, but I cannot confirm it. See the label-order note on s067_1. — Complete item, three paragraphs. Printed error kept as set: “photographs filed from the the invasion zone” — the word “the” is doubled across the line break.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
