“JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli troops clashed with Arab youths in at least seven towns and refugee camps in the occupied territories yesterday. Hospital officials and radio reports said a 17-year-old Palestinian was killed. An army spokeswoman denied the youth was shot by soldiers and said troops used only tear gas and rubber bullets to break up the protests. The death brings the number of Palestinians killed to 215 since an uprising against Israeli rule in the occupied territories began Dec. 8. Four Israelis have also been slain… In the West Bank town of Jenin, Nael Yousef Muhamad Hamaisi died of a gunshot wound in the head after a demonstration by students erupted into a stone-throwing clash with soldiers, Israel radio and hospital officials said… In southern Israel, about 50 Israeli writers and artists staged a demonstration near the Ketziot military prison, calling for the release of the 2,500 Arabs detained without trial, many of them held in the prison. ‘If the people got their rights then the artists, Jewish and Palestinian, would not have to come here,’ said Suleiman Mansour, a Palestinian artist. ‘We demand the release of Palestinian prisoners, but our biggest demand is self-determination and a state for the Palestinian people.’ Israeli author Amos Keinan said several of those jailed were Palestinian writers who were among the 25 Arabs and Jews signing a symbolic ‘peace treaty’ at a June ceremony in Jerusalem.”
