Violence continues while Arafat leaves
By Joel Greenberg, N.Y. Times News Service

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM — Palestinian gunmen killed an Israeli customs agent and Israeli troops shot dead three Palestinian teenagers in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday on the eve of a meeting in Washington between President Bill Clinton and Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian leader. Mr. Arafat left Wednesday for Washington, where he is scheduled to meet Mr.
Clinton on today to discuss ways to revive peace efforts, which have been devastated by more than five weeks of street clashes and gun battles that have left more than 180 people dead, most of them Palestinians. As Mr. Arafat headed for Washington, Prime Minister Ehud Barak of Israel sent a letter to world leaders criticizing what he called Mr.
Arafat's resort to violence and urging a negotiated agreement on a Palestinian state. "The only road to be taken is the one leading to an honorable, agreed-upon, negotiated birth of a Palestinian state," Mr. Barak wrote in the letter released by his office. The violence has persisted despite a truce agreed upon last week and an earlier cease-fire accord reached last month. Mr.
Barak, who is scheduled to meet Mr. Clinton on Sunday, said that the killing of the customs agent near the Rafah border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt "put in doubt" Mr. Arafat's intentions of observing the truce.
How this transcription was made
Date and publication rest on the collector's slide label; no masthead, folio or printed dateline appears on this clipping.
Context added by this archive
Clipped two-column article, no masthead, no folio, no printed date; date is label-only. There is no deck. PRINTER'S ERROR PRESERVED: 'scheduled to meet Mr. Clinton on today' — the Naples Daily News version of the same wire copy reads 'on Thursday', so a sub here has replaced 'Thursday' with 'today' and left the 'on' standing. Transcribed as printed.
This paper keeps the New York Times house style of 'Mr. Arafat' and 'Mr. Barak' throughout; the Naples Daily News on the same day strips every honorific. WIRE-COPY DIVERGENCE: the Anderson text STOPS at Faris Odeh.
The Naples Daily News printed three further named Palestinian dead — Muhammad Abu Ghali, 16, Raed Daoud, 14, and two unnamed young men — and the Barak state-commission inquiry into 13 Arabs killed. This clipping is a cut-down of the same dispatch. Faris Odeh, named here at 14, is the same boy Hugh Dellios lists by name in the op-ed on slides 67 and 68.
