Protesters stand up for Palestinians
Binghamton demonstrators criticize actions by Israelis

“BINGHAMTON — About 60 demonstrators gathered Friday in front of the Broome County Courthouse to protest the treatment of Palestinians in Israel. The demonstrators carried a wide array of signs, some reading ‘No Justice, No Peace,’ ‘Stop Genocide in Palestine’ and ‘Sharon Must Stop His Nazism.’
Farouq Al-Khalidi of Binghamton said it was their responsibility to speak out against the terror being directed at Palestinians. ‘We would feel terribly guilty if we didn’t exercise our rights as citizens and express our views,’ Al-Khalidi said. He said there is a lack of support for the Palestinians because of ignorance.
‘If most Americans knew the real story, they would probably be more sympathetic,’ Al-Khalidi said. The demonstration, organized by the Islamic Organization of the Southern Tier, included a march from the courthouse to the Federal Building. Among the protesters were local religious leaders and students.
