Arabs, Israelis killing children

Transcribed from the clipping
Diya Tmeizi. Koby Mandell. Faris Odeh. Shalhevet Pass. Burhan Himuni. Yehuda Shoham. Mohammed al Dura. The list goes on. They are children as young as 2 months, both Israeli and Palestinian, whom the world got to know in the last 15 months because they died.
As we all watched in horror, their parents grieved after they were shot down by soldiers or snipers, stoned through the windshield of a car, found bludgeoned in a cave, torn apart by a helicopter missile. Already more than 200 names long, the list of dead children and devastated parents will be longer in a year's time.
And quite likely the world will still be asking: For the sake of their children, how can fathers and mothers let this go on? The dawn of 2002 brought no end in sight to a conflict in which the protective love of parenthood is no match for the forces that put Mideast children at risk every day.
While the Bush administration vainly tries to coax a cease-fire from lulls, vicious terror attacks on coming-of-age bat mitzvah parties and the bulldozing of Gaza homes where hundreds of children live give no hint that the Israelis and Palestinians are preparing peace and safety for the next generation.

MASTHEAD DISAGREES WITH PUB: the folio at the top of this clipping reads 'WILMINGTON MORNING STAR | 11A'. Maria's pub label is 'Star News'.
Do not change pub; the two are the same Wilmington, NC paper at different points in its naming, but the masthead on THIS page says WILMINGTON MORNING STAR, and if 'Star News' is a new spelling in the archive it would ingest as a second newspaper. Flagging for Eva.
The folio's top edge is clipped, so the page number reads as '11A' with the tops of the figures cut; treat the page as probable rather than certain. LABEL ORDER: Maria's label lists slide 67 as 'USA Today Dec 5 2005' then 'Star News Jan 30 2002', but s067_1 is the Star News/Morning Star item and s067_2 is the USA Today item. The images are in the reverse order from the label.
No printed date appears on the clipping, so the date itself is label-only; the text's internal reference, 'The dawn of 2002 brought no end in sight' and 'the last 15 months' from September 2000, is consistent with late January 2002. 'OPINIONS & IDEAS' is a SECTION FLAG, not a deck; the standing author name 'HUGH DELLIOS' above the headline is the byline.
The headline is the article's own. The pull quote in column two, 'The protective love of parenthood is no match for the forces that put Mideast children at risk every day', is a pull quote taken from the body, not a deck.
Tagline at the foot: 'Hugh Dellios just completed three years as the Chicago Tribune's Middle East correspondent.' This is the only op-ed in the batch and it is written on an explicit both-sides frame — 'Arabs, Israelis killing children', 'both Israeli and Palestinian', 'neither side's leadership appears eager to quell'.
Within that frame it nonetheless prints 'booby-trap bombs that Israeli soldiers plant on a street leading to a Gaza school' and 'the bulldozing of Gaza homes where hundreds of children live', and it names four Palestinian children with their ages and the circumstances of their deaths.
It also prints 'Many Palestinians claim not to know this' about Israeli teenagers killed by suicide bombs — an assertion about a whole people, offered without a source. The whole of column two and the upper half of column three were read at page magnification only; columns one and three were transcribed from magnified crops.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
