Thoroughly Modern Deborah
JOHN MARK YOUNG, Oklahoma Columnist

Transcribed from the clipping
Looks are deceiving. The elderly woman didn't look the part. She looked like everybody's grandmother and was in fact somebody's grandmother. But that's not why all eyes in the cavernous room were focused on her now. She had been born in the same year that the United States had fought the Spanish American War.
Had she stayed in the country of her birth we might have considered her an enemy at the height of the Cold War. But when she was only eight years old in 1906 her family moved from the Ukraine, one of the “republics” in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.), to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They were refugees seeking to escape the persecution of Jews by the Czar's forces.

Context added by this archive
A small-town Oklahoma column written entirely from the Israeli side. People of Palestine appear only as 'the Arabs', 'Arab children', 'Arab terrorists', 'the seemingly perpetual Palestinian refugee problem'; no Palestinian is named or quoted.
Useful as the counter-case in the 2001-02 group: the same months in which the Daily Illini printed a Jenin woman's testimony, this paper printed Golda Meir's forgiveness line without comment.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
