JERUSALEM, Aug. 1 — To the students and professors who spend their days there, the fortresslike campus of Hebrew University on Mount Scopus seemed to offer protection from the furious conflict battering this city. That sense of security lay in ruins today, a day after the bombing of a campus cafeteria in which seven people were killed and dozens wounded.

The attack challenged efforts to maintain a diverse academic community in an environment rife with bloodshed and hate. … Some Arab students said they had already felt reverberations from the bombing. Mahmoud Ektelat, 25, an accounting student from Nazareth, said some of his Jewish dormitory neighbors had urged the expulsion of Arabs from Israel.

Sumaya Aghbaria, 22, of Umm al-Fahm, a mathematics major, said she sensed that people were eyeing her suspiciously as she walked through the campus today in traditional Muslim dress. A security guard at one entrance demanded that she unload every book from her bag and unbind a sheaf of papers for inspection, she said.

… Janan Tuma, 20, an Israeli Arab law student who said she had many Jewish friends on campus, asserted that now was the time to make those relationships count. “This is when we need each other,” she said. “The bomb didn’t distinguish between Jews and Arabs, and the idea behind it was to divide us.

What’s important about these events is the response. If we know how to respond, things will work out.”

How this transcription was made

Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. The page carries no masthead, running head or folio - it is cut above the section rule - so the date is not fixed from a printed date line; it rests on the slide label, corroborated by a dateline of 'JERUSALEM, Aug. 1' and by the bombing being placed 'Wednesday', 31 July 2002 having been the Wednesday of the Hebrew University cafeteria bombing. The newspaper is identified from the printed credits 'Ruth Fremson/The New York Times' and 'The New York Times' on the maps. A separate check established that this is not the same article as the sibling piece the archive already holds from the same day and section. 'THE UNIVERSITY' above the headline is a department flag for the day's package, not a deck. THE EXCERPT CONTAINS TWO ELISIONS, each marked with an ellipsis, so that the three named Palestinian students sit inside the record's press text. Read from crops magnified to between eleven and fourteen times page scale.
