“My town and its people are slowly suffocating… Qalqilya is a lovely town, an ancient Canaanite town, home to 45,000 Palestinian men, women and children… We had a decent life; we prospered. We were a rare oasis of co-existence where Israelis came to buy our fruit, eat in our restaurants and visit our zoo… One-third of Qalqilya’s water supply is inaccessible; the wells now lie outside the wall… It is time to start building bridges instead.”

The highest-standing Palestinian byline in this collection: a signed essay by the elected head of a town, in a major American paper’s Sunday opinion section, beside two commissioned essays and a Tribune photograph taken at the Erez checkpoint at three in the morning. American newspapers were capable of this. The question this archive asks is how rarely it happened.
