Israeli troops and tanks slice deep into Gaza

Slice, for an army entering a place where a million and a half people live. It is a verb for cake and for surgery, and what it does here is make the ground the object and leave the people out of the sentence entirely. Eight days later a Washington paper used advance and had to say where they were advancing into: Gaza’s urban areas (CP-2009-015).
