“NABLUS, West Bank — Palestinian security forces arrested a militant in Nablus this week, setting off clashes with young gunmen who have formed a new armed group outside the control of any faction… The militant group, named the Den of Lions, said in a letter to The Associated Press: ‘We will not abandon our brother… who is wanted by the occupation forces and is currently kidnapped.’… Ghassan Khatib, a political scientist at Birzeit University, said young Palestinians have lost faith in their leadership… Tahani Mustafa, a Palestinian analyst, said the new groups reflect ‘a vacuum’… Polls show a large majority of Palestinians want President Mahmoud Abbas to resign.”

The first naming of the Lion’s Den in American wire copy, and the wire service quotes the group directly from a letter it was sent. Two Palestinian analysts are named and explain the group’s emergence in their own words, which is not how it is usually explained later.
