FRIENDS.

Transcribed from the clipping
“My Denomination at Work in Other Lands” was a subject which brought out many interesting remarks. The leader Sunday evening was Khalil A. Totah, who told about the work of the Friends’ Mission at Ramallah, Palestine. Mr Totah was well posted on the work, being a native of Ramallah and having been to the mission there.
Other members spoke of the work being done by Friends in Madagascar, Africa, and China. The meeting was a lively one from start to finish, and was well attended.
How this transcription was made
NOTHING ON THIS CLIPPING IS DATED AND NOTHING ON IT NAMES A NEWSPAPER. It is a cut paragraph under a standing head, with no masthead, no folio and no page number, and its only time reference is relative — “The leader Sunday evening was…”. The newspaper and the date of 3 November 1910 rest on the hand-typed slide label alone. THERE IS A FURTHER PROBLEM WITH THE NEWSPAPER AND IT IS NOT A TRANSCRIPTION PROBLEM. The label names a masthead that did not exist in 1910: the Worcester Telegram and the Worcester Evening Gazette were two separate papers then and did not become one title until long afterwards, and this archive’s holdings under that joint name begin in 1954. The archive also holds Worcester Telegram separately, from 1948. A 1910 clipping therefore predates both holdings, the older of the two names would be the better home, and nothing printed on this page can decide between them — or confirm that it is a Worcester paper at all. The attribution should be read as unsettled. “FRIENDS.” is a standing head over a denominational news column, not a headline written for this item; it occupies the headline field because a record requires one. “Mr Totah”, with no period after Mr, is as printed, both times.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1910-003.
