“NAIROBI, Kenya (UPI) — Israel has denied travel permits to five Palestinian women in the occupied Arab territories who were invited to attend the U.N. Decade for Women conference, a PLO representative said today.
The General Union of Palestinian Women, the women’s branch of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said Israel barred the women in response to a request by the Reagan administration. Salwa Abu Khadra, who heads the group, told reporters at the PLO headquarters in the Kenyan capital that the women live in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip…
‘Security Reasons’. Khadra said their applications to travel to attend the U.N. conference and the non-governmental meeting that started today were turned down because of ‘security reasons.’… ‘Mr. Reagan himself is involved in the action of depriving some groups of women from coming here to share in the conference.
It is all part of their strategy to bar our women. Israel decided to go along with the action requested by the United States,’ Khadra said.
Khadra identified the women as Samiha Khalil, president of the Family Resurgence Society in El-Bireh; Zahira Kamal, a teacher and general-secretary of the Union of Women’s Work Committees in Jerusalem; and Siham Barghuti, Ni’mah al Helon and Amal Wahdan, all women social workers and women’s rights activists.”
