Transcribed from the clipping

London, Dec. 15.—Until the capture of Beersheba and Gaza, the largest and most important village in Palestine, the British expeditionary force had hitherto occupied Kara Yunis, says the Manchester Guardian’s correspondent with the Egyptian forces.

The name translated becomes simply John’s Tavern, and here there must have been from of old a halting place on the great caravan route from Egypt to Syria. The village lies midway between Rafa, our border town, and Gaza, separated from the sea by two or three miles of rolling sand dunes.

Around it on every side is a belt of trees and orchards a mile or more in depth, and the water which makes possible this sudden blossoming of the plain is pumped from ancient wells lying in the midst of its lands.

How this transcription was made

Read from the scan by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by optical character recognition and not by a person. The clipping carries no masthead or date line, so its date and newspaper rest on the record it arrived with, not on anything visible in the scan.

Date check: No masthead and no date line appear on this scan. The dateline reads "London, Dec. 15.", one day before the slide date of 1917-12-16, which is the normal gap for a cabled story. The year cannot be verified from the image.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
