“Unbelievable as it may seem, there have been some unfeeling Jews who protested to Senator Lodge against his Senate resolution in favor of Zionism… Once the foundation has been laid and the building has gotten under way, it would be nothing short of criminal if any member of the family were to attempt violently to destroy the foundation… Or is it because Reform Judaism claims that the Jews are a religious group instead of a nation, a people? How dare Reform Judaism claim that?”

Two editorials on one page. The second, HOW DARE THEY!, attacks Rabbis Calisch, Landman and Philipson for appearing before a House committee against the Hamilton-Fish resolution, and records their claim to speak for several hundred congregations and about 95 per cent of the Reform Jews of America. The question it puts — whether a group is a religion or a people — is the same test the Associated Press would identify in 1988 as governing what to call Palestinians.
