PALESTINE AND THE ZIONISTS.
EDWARD BLISS REED

Transcribed from the clipping
To the Editor of The New York Times: In a letter published in THE TIMES for March 15, C. C. Johnston disapproves of the work of the delegation from Palestine which for several months has made London its headquarters and has tried to state the case of the non-Zionists of the Holy Land. Mr. Johnston calls their work “insidious.”
If that be so, American principles and ideals must fairly reek with insidiousness. The Zionists are at present outnumbered in Palestine by a majority of nearly ten to one, yet they are working to make of the Holy Land a Zionist State.
To do this they must swamp the present inhabitants with subsidized immigrants and, through political influence, gain the economic control of the country. This they are attempting to do, and it is this that the Palestine delegation is fighting. At a recent Zionist meeting in Philadelphia Mr.
Sokolow, one of the most influential of the Zionist leaders, informed his audience that the Zionists “can have Palestine if they will it.” Strangely enough, there are Palestinians who feel that their country belongs to them, rather than to aliens. It is a very natural feeling. Zionists in Palestine have told Mr.
Johnston that Zionism is good for Palestine, but that is hardly a convincing proof. The aims and methods of politicial Zionism are opposed to the principles of liberty and justice generally held by Americans. It is an unfortunate thing to support in Palestine a plan of government to which no American would submit in his own land. EDWARD BLISS REED.
