Dinar and Shekel Reappear In Currency of Palestine

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM, Jan. 28 (Jewish Telegraphic Agency).—The dinar, the ancient Jewish monetary unit which is so frequently mentioned in Jewish Biblical literature, will again become the monetary unit of the new Palestine.
This decision was reached today at the joint meeting of the two commissions appointed by the Palestine Government, one representing Palestine Jews, the other representing Palestine ,Arabs, for the purpose of choosing a name for the contemplated new currency, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent learns.
The smaller coins of the Palestine currency will bear two names, one in Hebrew and the other in Arabic. The commissions have agreed to the following: The dinar is to be equal in value to one English pound.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan at 5x to 24x by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by OCR and not by a person. DATE PROBLEM: the dateline reads 'JERUSALEM, Jan. 28' - the second digit has two closed bowls at 24x and is an 8 - while the label date is 27 January 1925, the day before, and the body says the decision 'was reached today'. A paper cannot print a dispatch the day before it is filed, so the label date is impossible as it stands; there is no masthead or folio on the clipping to settle it, and the date has not been changed. Nothing on the clipping names the publication either, so pub rests on the slide label alone; the Jewish Telegraphic Agency is the filing wire, not the publisher. Printed oddity kept as set: 'Palestine ,Arabs,' with a comma before as well as after. No person on either commission is named.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
