“JERUSALEM. — The Sinai peninsula, always the main road for hashish traffic between Egypt and Palestine, has been the scene recently of several exciting encounters with smugglers. One band was pursued for hundreds of miles across difficult country but because of a two days’ start the caravan was not overtaken. The trail led, however, to a mountain near the Gulf of Suez where seventy-seven kilos of hashish were concealed pending the arrival of boats and a caravan of camels to run the consignment to Cairo. A group of Palestine Arabs was caught in Raffa on the coast landing hashish from a boat. The smugglers under the heavy fire of the patrol beat a hasty retreat leaving behind a dead camel and 265 kilos of hashish. The police expect to capture the smugglers, having identified the tribe to which they belong by the marks on the camel. The Palestine tobacco ordinance has just been amended restricting to the minimum the area in which hashish may be planted.”
