Three weeks after the Peel Commission recommended partition. Two moves in one headline block. First, scene of strife 6,000 years, which makes the thing ancient and therefore nobody in particular’s doing.
Second, the balance in the line beneath: both people have struggled heroically to create a homeland, given equal weight and the same verb, in a country the sentence calls barren at the very end — after a paragraph about two peoples living in it.
