“Eight thousand Arab residents of Gaza who were suspected of harboring and assisting rebels against British authority were rounded up, searched, questioned and relieved of firearms in a surprise attack at dawn… Forcing the city’s elders to guide them, 18 British searching parties entered each home… As the troops entered the historic gates the sound of the truck motors set Gaza’s dogs to barking and almost spoiled the army’s plans for a silent, surprise occupation.”

Nothing is omitted. The mass detention is in the second paragraph, plainly stated and accurate. What has been removed is that any of it is happening to anybody: the only subhead is Dogs Almost Spoil Plan, because the dogs are the story’s only jeopardy, and the person the piece is built around is Samson. A reader in Wichita was told a good yarn about the Holy Land and every fact in it was true.
