British Blast Arab Village For Revenge

Transcribed from the clipping
As a punitive measure against Arab rebels in the Palestine uprising, British troops dynamited a small Arab village of Miar, near Acre, in Palestine, Oct. 27. Forty houses were blown up in retaliation for Arab sniping of British troops. Miar is in Northern Palestine, between the Bay of Acre and the Sea of Galilee. This is an Associated Press radiophoto, transmitted from London.
How this transcription was made
THE PAGE DATES THE EVENT AND NOT THE PRINTING, AND THE TWO ARE A FORTNIGHT APART. The caption, read at 5x, says British troops dynamited the village “Oct. 27”. The label dates the printing to 2 November 1938, six days later. That gap is ordinary for an Associated Press radiophoto moving from London in 1938, and the caption says plainly that is what this is, but the only date printed anywhere on this image is the date of the explosion. There is no masthead, no folio and no page number, so the newspaper, the city and the printing date all rest on the hand-typed slide label. THE PAIRING IS UNRESOLVED for the same reason as its sibling: neither image on the slide can be fixed to its half of the label from its own page, and this record follows image order supported only by the plausibility of the radiophoto turnaround. At the foot of the clipping the tops of three further display lines are cut by the scan edge; only the upper third of the letters survives, and an attempt to date the page from them was abandoned rather than guessed at. This is a different photograph of the same demolition from the one on the other half of the slide, not a second printing of one picture: the smoke column, the angle on the village and the foreground rock all differ. Where the Associated Press caption gives the cause as retaliation for Arab sniping of British troops, the International News Service caption beside it gives it as reprisal for Arab terrorism on Jewish settlements. The village is spelt Miar here and Miiar there; both as printed.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
