Shown from the top. The whole column — 3.8 times taller than it is wide — is in the enlargement.
Transcribed from the clipping
Funeral for George Salem, 65, of 3852 Glencoe-dr, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Johns-Ridout’s West Chapel and at 3 p.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, the Rev. Emanuel Bouyaucas officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood. A native of Ramallah, Palestine, Mr. Salem made his first trip to this country in 1909.
He settled in Birmingham in 1927 but continued to make frequent visits to his old country. He made his last trip in November. Mr. Salem, who died yesterday morning at a local hospital following an illness of several weeks, was a veteran of World War I and was a member of the American Legion in Brooklyn, N. Y.
He is survived by the widow; four sons, Badie, Sam, Hallie and Fred Salem; two daughters, Misses Lelia and Widad Salem; one brother, Essa Salem, all of Birmingham; and three sisters living in Jordan.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan at 2.9x to 12x. ONLY THE YEAR OF THE FOLIO SURVIVES. The top left corner of the clipping catches the tail of a folio line and the only part of it left is “1957”, read with the contrast stretched; the weekday, the month and the day are cut off by the edge of the cut. So the page confirms the label’s year and nothing else about the date, and 11 July 1957 comes from the hand-typed slide label. The newspaper is not named anywhere on the clipping either; Birmingham is established by the story’s own content — Glencoe-dr, Johns-Ridout’s, Elmwood, “all of Birmingham” — but the title rests on the label. “3852 Glencoe-dr” with the abbreviated hyphenated street type is this paper’s style, and “the widow” rather than “his widow” is as set. Below the obituary the next headline is cut by the edge of the clipping and is not identified.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
