The Middle East is a long way from High Point, but the current crisis there will be brought here tonight in a direct and authoritative manner. The transferral will be effected through a panel discussion sponsored by the High Point League of Women Voters. The meeting, open to the public, will be held in the audio-visual room of the public library on S. Main Street.

The four-member panel will consist of two foreign college students and two WCUNC profesnors. The students, one Arab and one Israeli, will present the viewpoints of their respective countries on Middle East problems. Meron Ronnie Medzini, 21 year old native of Jerusalem, will give the Israeli side of issues.

Miss Julia Khalaf, native of Ramallah, Jordan, will explain the Arabic stand. Jordan Kurland, professor of history, and Dr. Peter Burger, professor of sociology, will be the other panel members. Tartt Bell, director of the American Friends Service Committee’s headquarters here, will act as moderator.

All panel members have extensive backgrounds which qualify them as experts on Middle East questions. Medzini served in the Israeli defense forces from 1951 until 1954, and was discharged as a lieutenant. He is presently a student at City College in New York, majoring in international and governmental affairs.

He is also chairman of the Israel Student Council for the East Coast and a representative to the International Student’s Organization. His mother is secretary to the Israeli delegation to the United Nations. Medzini, who is flying down especially for tonight’s meeting, is scheduled to arrive at Greensboro-High Point Airport late this afternoon.

Miss Khalaf has been in the United States for over three years. She was first enrolled as a student at Warren-Wilson Junior College and is now a senior at Guilford College, majoring in mathematics. She has stated her intention to attend graduate school in the United States, but will return to Jordan if that is not possible.

How this transcription was made

Read from the scan at 5x. The clipping carries no masthead, no folio and no page number, and the story is written for the day of publication without carrying a date, so the newspaper and the date of 27 February 1957 rest on the hand-typed slide label. The label’s fortnight is corroborated by the page: the story continued beside this one, marked FROM PAGE ONE-A, is about an American plan at the United Nations to get Israeli forces to withdraw without a call for sanctions, which is the late-February 1957 fight over Sinai and Gaza. High Point, North Carolina is confirmed by the story’s content — the local League of Women Voters, the library on S. Main Street, the Greensboro-High Point airport — but the title rests on the label, which wrote the paper with a definite article this archive’s spelling does not carry; the record follows the archive. “Two WCUNC profesnors” is as printed, read twice. Neither student speaks in the story, which was written before the panel took place, and there is no follow-up on the clipping reporting what either of them said. The unrelated continued story on the same clipping prints “Arab obejctions”, which is recorded here because it is on the sheet and is not in the excerpt.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
