THE ARAB REFUGEES

Transcribed from the clipping
The drama of the Suez is now in a quiescent stage. Israeli cargoes go up and down the Gulf of Aqaba, in spite of the continuing general tension between Israel and the Arab world. During the past few weeks, however, too little attention has been paid to the most important continuing cause of bitterness in the Middle East.
This is the existence of close to a million Arab refugees and children of refugees—over 200,000 in the Gaza Strip, over half a million in Jordan, the rest mostly in Lebanon and Syria. Ever since the State of Israel made good its independence, most of these refugees have been wards of the United Nations.
They have been orphans of the storm, never allowed to starve to death, given as much medical care as possible, and even receiving a little education. But $27 a year per capita, which is about what they have been having, does not buy luxury. Director Henry R.
Labouisse of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees is now in the United States in the course of an international search for enough money to keep his work going through 1958.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan at 6x to 8x by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by OCR and not by a person. An unsigned editorial carrying no masthead, folio, dateline or byline and no printed date, so the publication attribution rests on the slide label alone and only the YEAR can be read off the text - the Suez crisis is 'now in a quiescent stage' and Labouisse is raising money 'to keep his work going through 1958'. The day and month come from the label. Close to a million refugees are counted by territory and costed at $27 a head a year; the only person named is the American who runs the relief agency.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
