Holy Land Village Attacked

“JERUSALEM, Dec. 26 (AP).—Jewish armed forces attacked Silwan village just southeast of Jerusalem, Friday night by moonlight, supposedly to avenge an Arab raid last week on a Mount of Olives funeral procession. The British army said casualties were not known. Police sources said they were ‘heavy and mostly Arab.’
Government hospitals admitted some wounded patients but would not say how many. The sound of tommygun fire and grenade explosions echoed over Jerusalem for two hours. Police sent flares soaring over the troubled areas. The Silwan raid topped off a day in which 22 persons died by violence in the Holy Land, 17 of them Jews shot by snipers.
The Jewish victims included a prominent official of the Jewish Agency, a three-year-old girl and a 70-year-old woman. Three Arabs and two British civilians also were killed. The unofficial death toll grew to 369 in Palestine and 490 in the entire Middle East for the period since the United Nations assembly voted Nov. 29 to partition the Holy Land.
Hagana, the Jewish defense army, laid the increase in snipers’ activities to the arrival in Palestine of 200 Syrian-trained volunteers led by five former German officers. The bulk of the attackers’ fire was directed against motor convoys. Two Jews were killed Friday night in a sniping duel in Haifa, one of them a woman peddler with milk cans.
Earlier, two other Jews were found shot to death in the village of Holon just south of Jaffa. An 18-year-old Arab was wounded mortally in a grenade and rifle attack on the village of Beit Safara. An Arab watchman was killed by a land-mine explosion in an orange grove near the Lydda village airport.”

The Jewish dead are given ages and occupations — a three-year-old girl, a seventy-year-old woman, a woman peddler with milk cans. The Arab dead are a number, an eighteen-year-old, and a watchman.
