“JERUSALEM, Dec. 1 — (INS)— New anti-American violence flared in the Syrian city of Beirut today and another Jew was shot to death in Lebanon, bringing to 19 the fatality toll in the first stages of the Arab-Jewish ‘holy war.’ The United Nations’ decision to partition Palestine touched off the new Beirut demonstrations.
An estimated 10 thousand Arab students marched through the streets and stoned the United States Information office and the French legation. The demonstrators carried Arab flags and posters which read: ‘Fire and steel is the only language the Zionists understand.’
They shouted anti-American slogans, and were joined by thousands of other Arabs who went on strike in the cities of Tripoli and Saida as a protest against the partition. The new killing in Jerusalem occurred just outside the Damascus gate.
The Holly Land seethed with Arab anger as heavily armed tribesmen swarmed down from the hills of central Palestine, apparently ready to wage ‘holy war.’”
