“JERUSALEM, Palestine, Dec. 2.—(UP)—Wild Arab and Jewish mobs did damage estimated at more than $1,000,000 in Jerusalem today and a pitched night battle was fought in the turbulent ‘no man’s land’ between Arab Jaffa and Jewish Tel Aviv. In Cairo the holy men of 1,000-year-old Al Azher University called for a worldwide Moslem holy war in defense of Palestine.

The Syrian Parliament in Damascus decreed compulsory national service, appropriated $860,000 for defense of Palestine and named the chief of the Iraq general staff its supreme commander in event of war. Hours of wild rioting here ended at dusk when an emergency curfew was clamped on the Holy City.

At that time the reports of rifles, pistols and hand grenades broke the quiet on the Jaffa-Tel Aviv border and four hours later firing was still heard.”
