Transcribed from the clipping

“Some pieces of twisted metal, a pile of rubble from which the dust rises, a row of sullen women, a hole in the minaret of the mosque: it seems a small enough tragedy, even rather prosaic, a cliché of war.

Yet this shattered village, which is called Es Samu and lies in the Hebron Hills very near the western frontier of Jordan, will probably become one of the more important place names in the dog gazetteer of Arab-Israeli relations.”

Context added by this archive

A long magazine piece built on the ruins of Es Samu, six weeks after the raid. It reports that eighteen Jordanians and one United Nations figure were killed, and that the Israeli reason given was reprisal for Arab guerrilla activity inside Israel. The headline makes the Arabs the ones who deny a reality.
