“TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel plans to settle tens of thousands of Arab refugees in the Gaza Strip and on the west bank of the Jordan River, an authoritative economics writer said Thursday. Quoting official sources, David Krivine wrote in the Jerusalem Post that the resettlement plans would be made on economic grounds without regard for whatever territorial adjustments eventually may be made between Israel and Arab states. A refugee rehabilitation and settlement authority would be set up, ‘terminating two decades of confinement and idleness within the refugee camps,’ Krivine wrote. Some refugees have been in camps since they were displaced in the 1948 Palestine war. The program would be financed by Israel, but world Jewry, international bodies, and the Arabs themselves would be asked to contribute. ‘Much depends on the cooperation of local Arab authorities,’ Krivine wrote. ‘The first step is to get economic activity restored to its former levels.’”
